Mobile outreach vehicle provides health and social service support in the region
Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Ontario Health Team partners, United Way KFL&A, Kingston Community Health Centres, along with other community organizations launched a mobile unit providing integrated care services in the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington communities to hard-to-reach individuals. This includes people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness, people seeking wellness services or struggling with mental health and substance use, or people who experience barriers to health care such as transportation.
The Portable OutReach Care Hub (PORCH) is a retrofitted mobile Recreational Vehicle that can travel to parks, encampments, local gatherings, awareness events and festivals, as well as rural areas to provide health and social service supports and wellness services to individuals that may not otherwise have access.
PORCH is about improving access to care and enabling partner organizations to connect with harder-to-reach populations while working collaboratively to provide wrap-around care for those individuals. The mobile unit has a counselling room, a group space, and a room for clinical care to support people who are otherwise not able to access medical and clinical support. PORCH will be used to provide hepatitis C testing and treatment, sexual health care, and harm reduction services, including naloxone kits, immunizations, addiction treatment and services and more.
PORCH is funded by Kingston Community Health Centres through Ministry of Health funding and funds from Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy administered through United Way KFL&A. A number of partners will be providing services through PORCH including KFL&A Public Health, Family & Children’s Services, Addictions & Mental Health Services, and Youth Diversion, in addition to Street Health Centre. Services will expand to other areas and organizations as needed or as they can be provided in the region.
The PORCH RV will be making appearances at local festivals and events throughout Kingston. Community members are invited to stop by the RV to learn more about the services provided.
